I am immensely happy to find somebody else who agrees with me on this. Rian Johnson actually tried to grow the underlying philosophy of Star Wars into something bigger than the original films. It was wildly unexpected but also very appropriate and addressed a lot of the things that never quite seemed to "fit" about the premise of Star Wars. Characters were surprising. Nobody fit into an easy mold.

Contrast that to Episode 7, which copied the story structure of Episode 4 almost completely and just grafted new dialogue and characters on top of it. It was very weird -- fun, and an appropriate tribute, but weird.

That being said, I'd probably still put The Last Jedi as a runner-up to Rogue One. Not sure why, but that one just hit all the right buttons.
