Interesting idea. It has some merit.
When I was younger I believed that the church was a refuge for the broken. I started to drift when I realized that it was largely a gathering of the comfortable.
Maybe it's simply the corrupting influence of power. In a world where people can choose freely, they probably migrate away from pharisees and hypocrites. Christians have always been at their best when they were the underdogs. It's unsettling to see the comfortably affluent co-opting the suffering of past martyrs to feed their sense of persecution when they are now a well-accepted majority.
