I've found that making lists helps me. I'll sit down and start listing details about something I would normally overlook. Trees are a great subject.

So, for example, I might pick a tree and write about the quality of the bark, what the edges of a leaf are like. How many filaments radiate from the center.

Or larger details -- which tree is the largest? How many are there? How many different species are there?

I'm not saying that to suggest you should do the same. I suppose it's just my way of connecting -- we all have our own ways of getting outside our heads. I've spoken with other people and a surprisingly large number of people's ways involve trees. They're wonderful. :-D
