One of the problems with Twitter is that it is zero cost to the tweeters, but the cumulative effect is everything to the target. It's the same principle behind old-fashioned stoning, or seeding a fake bullet or three among the firing squad. By distributing the responsibility and allowing deniability everyone can excuse themselves for participating in something brutal.

Seems like you stumbled across the other half of that though, too? Low cost means most of the people chucking the stones don't have the investment to care much afterwards. So people who were targeted can pick themselves up. You did. Others have too. In the end your character wins out, especially if your character is perseverent.
