This is a compelling analogy. But also it only describes the protagonist (at best).

Everyone else in 1984 was in a position similar to the one you've described yourself being in.

This is a somewhat glib observation but I think Orwell captured it well. The main character of 1984 was the main character precisely because he stumbled across the truth.

The effect of a system that deprives you of the truth is that it robs you of the chance to be the main character of your own story. You're relegated to the background.
